Cost of Driving in Dubai 2026: Commute Cost by Area

31 Oct 2026 • Farhan Junaid

Quick answer: Driving to work in Dubai costs between about AED 50 and AED 800 a month in petrol, depending on where you live. Add Salik tolls of up to AED 554 a month if your route crosses two gates each way at peak time. Living close to work saves more than any fuel price cut. But a cheaper area further out can still win once you add rent to the sum. Below: the monthly commute cost from 15 areas to DIFC and to Dubai Internet City and Media City, plus our December 2026 fuel price forecast.

How we worked out the cost

  • Fuel price: Special 95 at AED 4.04 per litre, the official UAE price for November 2026.
  • Distance: the shortest road route from the centre of each community, measured with OpenStreetMap routing.
  • Days: a return trip on 22 working days a month.
  • Fuel use: 8 litres per 100 km for an average sedan and 12 litres per 100 km for an SUV in city driving.
  • Time: driving time without traffic. At rush hour, expect most trips to take 1.5 to 2 times longer.

Monthly commute cost to DIFC and Downtown by area

DIFC, Downtown and the Sheikh Zayed Road towers are Dubai’s biggest office cluster. Here is the monthly petrol bill for a return trip on every working day, before Salik and parking.

Sharjah looks cheap on distance, but the Al Ittihad Road and Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road crossings into Dubai are among the slowest in the country at rush hour. Many Sharjah commuters spend an hour or more each way, so the real cost is time, not petrol.

Monthly commute cost to Dubai Internet City and Media City

Dubai Internet City, Media City and Knowledge Park form the second big office hub, close to Dubai Marina.

Salik cost per month: the hidden part of the commute

Since 1 June 2026, Salik tolls include 5% VAT. Each crossing now costs:

TimeToll per crossing
Peak: 6am–10am and 4pm–8pm, Monday to SaturdayAED 6.30
Off-peak: 10am–4pm and 8pm–1am, and all day SundayAED 4.20
Night: 1am–6amFree

For a typical office worker, that adds up fast:

  • One gate each way at peak: AED 12.60 a day, about AED 277 a month.
  • Two gates each way at peak: AED 25.20 a day, about AED 554 a month. This is common for Dubai Marina or JLT to DIFC on Sheikh Zayed Road.
  • No gates: AED 0. Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road have no Salik gates, so many JVC, Motor City and Arabian Ranches residents can drive toll-free.

A toll-free detour only makes sense if it is short. With petrol at around AED 4 a litre, a sedan spends roughly 32 fils per kilometre. So skipping one AED 6.30 peak gate is worth a detour of up to about 19 km, but only if traffic on the other road is no worse.

Car vs Dubai Metro: cost of public transport

With a Silver nol card, a Metro trip costs AED 3 within one zone, AED 5 across two zones and AED 7.50 across more than two zones. A daily return trip from Dubai Marina to DIFC costs about AED 15, or around AED 330 a month.

Driving the same route costs about AED 343 in petrol plus up to AED 554 in Salik, before parking. That is around AED 900 a month. So for Metro-friendly areas such as Dubai Marina, JLT, Al Barsha, Business Bay and Downtown, the Metro can cut your commute cost by more than half. The Metro is less practical from JVC, Dubai Hills, Arabian Ranches or Damac Hills. You would need a feeder bus, a taxi or a park and ride.

Rent plus commute: what living in each area really costs

The cheapest commute is not always the cheapest life. Here is the monthly total for someone who works in DIFC and drives a sedan, using median advertised apartment rents for Q3 2026.

AreaMedian rent a monthPetrol a monthSalik a monthTotal a month
JVCAED 6,000AED 333AED 0 (Al Khail Road)AED 6,333
Business BayAED 8,750AED 68AED 0AED 8,818
Dubai MarinaAED 10,833AED 343AED 554AED 11,730
Downtown DubaiAED 15,000AED 46AED 0AED 15,046

Rent source: median advertised annual apartment rents for Q3 2026 (JVC AED 71,999, Business Bay AED 105,000, Dubai Marina AED 130,000, Downtown AED 180,000), reported by The Gulf Pulse on 14 October 2026, divided by 12. These cover all apartment sizes, so compare like for like when you search.

Two things stand out. JVC stays the cheapest option even with a 23 km drive each way, as long as you avoid Salik roads. And Dubai Marina only makes sense for a DIFC worker who takes the Metro. A Marina resident who drives to DIFC pays almost AED 900 a month just to get to work. If you work in Media City or Internet City, Marina flips to one of the cheapest commutes in the city.

Will commuting get cheaper in December 2026? Fuel price forecast

UAE petrol prices fell 24 fils a litre in November 2026, the first cut after three monthly increases. The December 2026 prices will be announced on 30 November. Our December forecast is flat to slightly lower, with Special 95 most likely between AED 3.88 and AED 4.08 per litre. The full scenarios are in our guide to UAE fuel prices for November 2026 and the December forecast.

What that means for your commute: a sedan driver doing 1,000 km a month uses about 80 litres. Every 10 fils change in the price moves the monthly bill by only about AED 8. At AED 3.88 the bill would be around AED 310, and at AED 4.08 around AED 326. So December’s price will make little difference. Where you live, and whether you pay Salik, matter far more.

6 ways to cut your commute cost in Dubai

  1. Live on the same side of the city as your office. Marina and JLT for Media City and Internet City. Business Bay and Downtown for DIFC.
  2. Shift your hours. Driving before 6am or after 8pm avoids peak Salik. Two off-peak crossings a day instead of peak saves about AED 92 a month.
  3. Use toll-free roads when they are not much longer. Al Khail Road and Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road run parallel to Sheikh Zayed Road.
  4. Mix Metro and car. Even two Metro days a week can save over AED 100 a month on a Marina to DIFC commute.
  5. Choose Special 95 or E-Plus 91. Unless your car needs Super 98, you save 12 to 19 fils on every litre.
  6. Ask about hybrid work. One home-working day a week cuts petrol and Salik by about 20%.

Frequently asked questions

How much is petrol per month in Dubai?

For a daily commute, most sedan drivers spend between AED 200 and AED 400 a month on petrol at November 2026 prices. Long commutes from Dubai South or across the city can cost AED 800 or more, and SUVs use about 50% more fuel.

For a typical commute, petrol plus Salik comes to roughly AED 300 to AED 900 a month. On top of that come insurance, servicing, registration and parking.

How much is Salik per month?

One peak gate each way on 22 working days costs about AED 277 a month. Two gates each way cost about AED 554. Since June 2026 a peak crossing costs AED 6.30 and an off-peak crossing AED 4.20, including VAT.

Is the Dubai Metro cheaper than driving?

Usually yes, if you live and work near a station. A daily Marina to DIFC Metro commute costs about AED 330 a month. Driving the same route costs about AED 900 with petrol and Salik.

Will petrol be cheaper in December 2026?

The official price will be announced on 30 November. We expect December fuel prices to stay flat or fall slightly. For most commuters, the change will be less than AED 20 a month.

Which Dubai area has the cheapest commute?

It depends on where you work. For DIFC and Downtown offices, Business Bay and Downtown are cheapest. For Media City and Internet City, Dubai Marina and JLT are cheapest. With rent included, JVC is often the lowest total cost for DIFC workers who use toll-free roads.

Figures checked on 1 November 2026. Fuel: official UAE prices for November 2026. Salik: rates including 5% VAT from 1 June 2026. Metro: RTA Silver nol card fares. Distances: OpenStreetMap routing from each community centre. Commute costs are estimates and depend on your car, your route and traffic.
